Inspired by Maya Angelou

You listened,
you heard,
you absorbed
the sound of souls freed in song
at a Southern
revival.

You looked,
you saw,
you felt
the deep wound
of ages
of hate.

You dreamed,
you wondered,
you contemplated
a life of equality
sleeping in
a junkyard.

You fought,
you struggled,
you persevered
until the barriers were broken
and the job
was yours.

I hope,
I wish,
I pray
for the strength to meet challenges
the way you
did yours.
